MCV4U tutoring — Calculus and Vectors
MCV4U is the course that decides engineering, mathematics and physical science applications. It runs fast, it assumes MHF4U material is already secure, and it is the Grade 12 course where students most often see their average fall.
What MCV4U covers
- Rates of change and the derivative from first principles
- Derivative rules: product, quotient, chain
- Curve sketching and applications of derivatives
- Derivatives of exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions
- Vectors in two and three dimensions
- Lines and planes, intersections and distances
Prerequisite
MHF4U (usually taken concurrently)
Where the marks go
Curve sketching and the vectors unit. Curve sketching fails because students memorise a procedure rather than reading what the derivative is telling them. Vectors fails because it arrives late in the year, looks unrelated to everything before it, and gets under-revised before the exam.
How we teach MCV4U
A weekly 60-minute live class with a batch of three students, all taking MCV4U and all at roughly the same point in it. We follow the Ontario school calendar, so the class covers the unit your child’s teacher is covering. Cadence doubles in the four weeks before a final.
